Life Around SMU - 3 6 Prettiest Places to Study @SMU Check if you miss any!

MSBAs are studying everyday and everywhere. Let's have a look at the pretty libraries around our campus and their stories behind. Anyone you haven't visited before? Just join and explore with us!

1. Fondren Library (Main Library)

Department: Central University Libraries

Fondren Library was SMU’s first stand-alone library building. Today Fondren Library is home to government documents, general collections, Center for Teaching Excellence, Southwest Review, DeGolyer Library and Special Collections as well as Archives of Women of the Southwest. The grand reading room today houses part of the DeGolyer’s Library’s book collection.

Did you know that people can see a beautiful aerial view view of SMU
campus in Fondren 4th floor?

2. Bridwell Library

Department: Perkins School of Theology

The history of a theological library on the Southern Methodist University campus predates the Bridwell Library building. The School of Theology began its work when the university opened in 1915 and a separate theological library was established in 1925. That library was housed in Kirby Hall, a building that is now Florence Hall, a part of Dedman School of Law.

3. Business Library

Department: Cox School of Business

The Business Library was founded in 1987 by Sharon Criswell and Florence (Foxy) Mason with an initial grant of computer equipment by AT&T. The overall faculty underwent a complete renovation in 2011. In September 2011, the renovated Business Library re-opened with the addition of The Kitt Investing and Trading Center.

4. Hamon Arts Library
Department: Central University Libraries

The Hamon Library’s circulating and reference collections contain more than 180,000 items relating to the visual and performing arts. In addition, the Library has some 300 subscriptions to arts periodicals and provides access to more than 40 online resources that are specific to the arts.

5. Underwood Law Library
Department: Dedman School of Law

SMU’s Underwood Law Library is the largest private academic law library west of the Mississippi River. Its collections include approximately 671,449 law-related volumes and equivalents, ranking the library among the top 20% of law libraries in the United States. Combined with the resources of SMU’s other libraries, more than 4 million volumes are available to our faculty and students, comprising the largest private research library collection in Texas and ranking third in the state in total volumes, after the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.

6. DeGolyer Library Special Collections
Department: Central University Libraries

DeGolyer is home to SMU’s special collections, a diverse catalog of primary sources for scholars and students. The library’s collection of Western Americana is particularly strong, and featured collections include SMU Archives and significant historical materials such as the papers of JCPenney, Texas Instruments, Belo Corp. and playwright Horton Foote.
